When I entered the field of pediatric otolaryngology,more than 25 years ago, the subspecialty was still well in its infancy with perhaps no more than fifty practitioners who devoted a majority of their time to its practice. Currently the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) numbers more than 300 members whose practice is limited exclusively to pediatric otolaryngology. As the subspecialty of pediatric otolaryngology has grown in numbers, it has also expanded as a field. Traditionally, all the members of my surgical group practiced all aspects of pediatric otolaryngology.
That is no longer true. Currently only two members manage all the children who require airway reconstruction—that is, children with compromise of either the structure and/or function of the upper airway, specifically the larynx and trachea. Likewise, two other members of our group work with a multidisciplinary team to provide cochlear implants to profoundly deaf children.
These same two members also perform any surgery that involves the pediatric skull base. Because their
practice involves unique skills to care for a small number of patients, these four surgeons have become “super-specialists” within pediatric otolaryngology. The remainder of our surgical group practices general pediatric otolaryngology, although each of us has our own favorite group of patients, be it those with chronic
ear disease, sinus disease, or even pediatric voice disorders. I have called upon the expertise of this group of
super-specialists and generalists within the field of pediatric otolaryngology to develop the major sections of
this book
