T he symphony. Jazz. Blues. Rock ‘n’ Roll. Each of us has a personal taste or tastes in music. W h a t we all share is the fact that in some form, in some way, music affects our souls, alters our moods, and enhances our lives. For this we owe thanks to the musicians whose constant striving for perfection produces the beautiful sounds that bring us pleasure, provide soothing contentment, or stir us to action. W h en they perform as soloists, we know them by name; more often they perform in ensemble and we know them only by the beauty they create. This book is dedicated to our subject, the instrumental musician, whose art is more often than not the product not only of arduous but also o f painful effort. T he care o f musicians is not always easy. As patients, just as they are as performers, musicians are demanding. T hey are perfectionists. Above all, they want to play, to perform. All treatment must bear this overriding patient need in mind. Musicians can be difficult patients also because their schedules and travels often interfere with rigid treatment programs. Flexibility must be the byword, not only o f the musician physically, but o f their caregivers psychologically. In addition, at least in the U S A , economics plays a role. M ost musicians are self-employed; few have robust health insurance coverage. Finding the means to pay for treatment, or to cover the necessities o f life during times o f disability, can be daunting. Thus, musicians tend to ‘play hurt’ for reasons both artistic and economic. Finally, music is a highly competitive profession. There are more excellent musicians than there are excellent jobs as musical performers. Com petition is keen, and although this keeps performance at the height of perfection, it also encourages musicians to hide their ills, lest their job, or a job opportunity, be given to another. Nevertheless, despite all the difficulties, the care o f musicians carries with it considerable rewards. The pleasure o f helping a fellow human being to better health is always rewarding, but it is doubly so when the result is multiplied by the pleasure that a restored musician brings to so many others. This book is therefore also dedicated to our audience, those from the healing and teaching arts who take the extra time and effort to care for musicians. W e hope that this work w ill provide them with new insight, better understanding, and a useful therapeutic framework
