CT of the Airways
CT of the Airways
In the past few decades, dramatic technological advancements in CT imaging have revolutionized noninvasive imaging of all thoracic structures, including the airways. With state-of-the-art equipment that is becoming increasingly commonplace, the entire airways can be imaged in only a few seconds, and elegant 3-D reconstructions can be created in only a few minutes.
In addition to providing a high-resolution anatomical display of the central and peripheral airways, CT is also establishing itself as the preeminent noninvasive imaging modality for assessing functional airway abnormalities. In parallel, there have also been important advances in diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy and surgery. The information provided by CT has become increasingly essential for establishing accurate diagnoses, guiding and planning procedures, and assessing response to therapy.
Considering the increasingly significant role of CT in airway imaging, there is a need for a comprehensive textbook that addresses CT imaging of the large and small airways. Toward this end, the purpose of this book is three-fold: first, to provide the reader with an up-to-date review of airway anatomy, physiology, pathology, and CT imaging methods; second, to provide the reader with a pragmatic compendium of the state-of-the-art in CT imaging of various common and uncommon airway disorders in adults and children; and third, to introduce the reader to new and emerging techniques that are not yet standard practice, but will likely play an important role in airway imaging in the near future.
